Back to newsSea water temperatures around Crete are warming as the summer season progresses. The island's Mediterranean waters typically reach their most swimmable conditions between June and September, with temperatures generally ranging from around 22 to 26 degrees Celsius by midsummer. Popular swimming areas include the beaches of Elounda and Agios Nikolaos in the east, Chania and Rethymno in the north, and the southern coast around Matala and Plakias, which tend to be slightly warmer due to their exposure. Visitors planning beach days can expect comfortable conditions for swimming throughout the summer months. The clearest and warmest waters are usually found in sheltered bays and coves. Tourists should check local forecasts before heading to more exposed beaches, as winds can occasionally affect sea conditions along the northern coastline.
