Crete Blends Ancient History With Epic Gorges and Pristine Beaches

Crete offers first-time visitors a dense mix of historical sites, beaches, mountain villages, and natural landscapes. The island's top archaeological draw is the Minoan palace of Knossos, near Heraklion, dating back over 3,500 years. The Samaria Gorge in western Crete is one of Europe's longest gorges and a popular hiking route, best attempted May through October. Beaches range from the famous pink sands of Elafonisi in the southwest to the palm-lined shore of Vai in the east. Traditional villages such as Archanes, Vamos, and Kritsa offer authentic local food and slower-paced Cretan culture away from resort areas. Heraklion, Chania, and Rethymno serve as the main urban bases, each with its own Venetian old town. Renting a car is strongly recommended, as many sites are spread across the island and poorly served by public transport.
