Back to newsA dog died within thirty minutes after eating a lagocephalus fish that had washed up on a beach in Crete. The lagocephalus, also known as the silver-cheeked toadfish or pufferfish, is an invasive species that has spread throughout the Mediterranean and is considered one of the most toxic fish in the world. Its flesh, organs, and skin contain tetrodotoxin, a powerful neurotoxin for which there is no antidote.
Tourists visiting Crete should be aware that lagocephalus fish occasionally wash up on beaches across the island. Do not touch or handle any unfamiliar fish found on the shore, and keep pets away from the water's edge and any beached marine life. If you or an animal comes into contact with one, seek emergency medical or veterinary care immediately. Local authorities advise reporting sightings to beach staff or coastguard.
