Back to newsGreek authorities are launching a pilot subsidy program for fishermen in Crete and the Dodecanese to target and remove pufferfish (lagokéfalos) from local waters. Fishermen will receive a payment per kilogram caught, with the program expected to begin in the coming weeks. The pufferfish, an invasive species that has spread through the Mediterranean, is highly toxic and poses a risk to both marine ecosystems and public health. Tourists should be aware that pufferfish must never be eaten, as their organs contain a potent poison with no antidote. If you see pufferfish offered at a market or taverna, do not purchase or consume it. The subsidized fishing effort aims to reduce the species' presence in Cretan waters and protect both local fisheries and visitors.
