Back to newsGreece is moving forward with major electrical grid interconnection projects connecting Crete, the North Aegean, the Dodecanese, and the Cyclades islands to the mainland grid. According to S. Papastavrou, these infrastructure upgrades are expected to generate approximately 1 billion euros in economic benefit. For Crete specifically, the interconnection will replace reliance on aging local power plants with cleaner, more stable mainland electricity. Tourists can expect improved power reliability across the island, reducing the occasional outages that have affected hotels and resorts, particularly during peak summer demand. The project is part of Greece's broader energy transition strategy and will support the island's growing tourism infrastructure by ensuring a more consistent and affordable electricity supply year-round.
