Back to newsRethymno, the historic coastal city on Crete's northern shore, has officially submitted its candidacy for the title of European Capital of Tourism 2027. The municipality is competing for the prestigious designation, which would bring increased EU visibility and investment to the region. Alongside the tourism bid, Rethymno submitted two separate European funding proposals focused on safer mobility, low-traffic street zones, and improvements to public spaces throughout the city. If successful, these projects could reshape how visitors move through the old town and waterfront areas, with pedestrian-friendly routes and upgraded public squares. The European Capital of Tourism designation recognizes cities that demonstrate innovation and sustainability in tourism development. Rethymno is already known for its well-preserved Venetian old town, 16th-century lighthouse, and fortress. Results of the candidacy process are expected later in 2026.
