Back to newsSeveral wildfires broke out across Crete but have been brought under control by firefighting crews. Blazes near Ierapetra, a coastal town on the southeastern coast, and Afrati, a village in the Heraklion regional unit, have been fully contained. A separate fire near Gazi, a suburb just west of Heraklion city, has no active front remaining.
Tourists visiting these areas should be aware that some roads near affected zones may have temporary restrictions while authorities monitor for flare-ups. Smoke may still be visible in the surrounding hillsides but poses no immediate danger. Visitors planning to hike or explore rural areas near Ierapetra or the Heraklion hinterland are advised to check local conditions before heading out, avoid lighting fires, and follow any instructions from local authorities. Emergency services remain on standby across the island.
