Heraklion Pauses Lions Fountain Maintenance After Public Outcry

Saturday, 20 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Maintenance works at the Morozini Fountain in Heraklion, also known as the Lions Fountain, have been temporarily suspended following strong public opposition. The decision to install protective wire mesh around the landmark during peak tourist season drew criticism from residents and local businesses in the historic city center. Authorities have agreed to revise the scheduling of the works in response. The Morozini Fountain, located on Lions Square (Plateia Liontarion) near the central market, is one of Heraklion's most visited landmarks, dating back to the Venetian period. Visitors can currently access the square without obstruction. Updated work schedules are expected to be announced, with works likely postponed to avoid further disruption during the busy summer months. Tourists planning to visit should find the area accessible for the foreseeable future.
