Extreme Heat Damages Brain Function Before Heat Illness Strikes

Sunday, 5 July 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Scientists are warning that extreme heat has measurable effects on the human brain, including reduced concentration, slower reaction times, impaired decision-making, and increased irritability. These effects can begin before a person feels physically overheated, making them easy to underestimate. For tourists visiting Crete during summer, this is particularly relevant given the island's intense July and August temperatures, which regularly exceed 35°C. Visitors are advised to limit outdoor activity between noon and 4 PM, stay consistently hydrated, seek shade or air-conditioned spaces during peak heat, and avoid alcohol in the middle of the day as it accelerates dehydration. If you feel confused, unusually fatigued, or disoriented in the heat, move to a cool environment immediately and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
