Back to newsA local official, Parassiris, has formally called for the completion of the Karterós-Kastélli road, which is intended to serve as an alternative access route to Crete's new Kastelli International Airport, currently under construction east of Heraklion. The intervention highlights ongoing concerns about infrastructure readiness ahead of the airport's anticipated opening, projected for 2028 with a capacity of up to 18 million passengers per year. The Karterós-Kastélli corridor would provide travelers with an additional road option connecting the north coast highway to the new facility, reducing congestion on the primary approach. Visitors planning future trips to Crete should be aware that road works in the eastern Heraklion region may cause delays, and it is advisable to allow extra travel time when moving between Heraklion city and areas east toward Kastelli.
