Back to newsThree of Crete's most visited beaches, Balos, Elafonisi, and Falasarna, currently operate without an official regulatory framework (KYA), according to a report by Patris. These pink-sand beaches attract thousands of visitors each summer but lack the ministerial designation that governs beach management, including rules on sunbed placement, vendor activity, and environmental protection zones. Without this framework, oversight of commercial activity and crowd control on these shores remains legally ambiguous. Tourists visiting these beaches this summer should be aware that facilities and services may be less regulated than on other organized beaches. All three locations remain open and accessible, but visitors are encouraged to respect the natural environment, particularly the protected pink sand at Elafonisi and the lagoon ecosystem at Balos.
