Back to newsToplou Monastery, located in the remote eastern tip of Crete near Sitia, holds a significant and painful chapter in the history of the Greek War of Independence. During the 1821 revolution, the monastery became the site of a massacre, as Ottoman forces targeted the monks and fighters who had taken refuge there. The monastery had long served as a stronghold of Cretan resistance, and this violence reflected the broader brutality of the independence struggle across the island.
Today, Toplou Monastery remains one of the most important historical and religious sites in Crete. Visitors can tour its fortified walls, museum, and Byzantine church, which house rare icons and artifacts. It is open to the public and sits roughly 70 kilometers east of Agios Nikolaos, making it a worthwhile stop on any eastern Crete itinerary.
