The Samaria Gorge in the Chania region is closed to visitors today, Friday May 22, due to forecasted heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions. Both entrances to the gorge are shut as a precautionary safety measure. The closure was announced by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization. Tourists who had planned to hike the gorge today should postpone their visit and check official sources before attempting the route on coming days. The Samaria Gorge, one of the longest gorges in Europe at 16 kilometers, requires good weather conditions to hike safely. Visitors already on Crete are advised to plan alternative activities in the Chania area for the day and monitor local weather updates before rescheduling their visit.
