Back to newsGreek authorities have officially launched a coordinated campaign to eliminate lagocephalus populations, an invasive and highly toxic pufferfish species, from Greek waters including those around Crete. The fish, originally from the Indo-Pacific, has spread aggressively through the Mediterranean and poses a serious health risk: its flesh and organs contain a powerful poison with no known antidote. Fishermen are being enlisted to catch and remove the species as part of the eradication effort. Tourists should be aware that lagocephalus may occasionally appear at local fish markets or be accidentally caught. Do not eat this fish under any circumstances, and if you see it offered for sale, report it to local authorities. Stick to reputable tavernas and avoid purchasing fish from unverified vendors along the coast.
