Double Earthquake Strikes Crete, No Damage Reported

Saturday, 20 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
A double earthquake was felt across Crete on Saturday afternoon, shortly after 12:30 pm. The tremors were particularly noticeable in the Chania regional unit and in several other areas throughout the island. According to the Geodynamic Institute, the earthquakes originated south of Crete. Seismic activity in this area is common due to the tectonic setting of the eastern Mediterranean, and the region is among the most seismically active in Europe. No immediate reports of structural damage or injuries have been confirmed based on available information. Tourists currently on the island should remain calm, follow guidance from local authorities, and be aware of standard earthquake safety procedures: stay away from cliffs or unstable structures if outdoors, and move to an open area away from buildings if shaking occurs. Monitor local news for updates.
