Significant Remains Found Beneath Heraklion's Venetian Walls

Archaeologists and researchers in Heraklion are examining findings beneath the Port Kiosk area, where ongoing work related to the city's Venetian Walls has revealed significant underground remains. Konstantinos Kampani, Research Director at the Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH), discussed findings from a 2015 study that identified structural issues in this section of the walls. The site is part of a 5.7 million euro restoration and infrastructure project aimed at preserving Heraklion's UNESCO-listed Venetian fortifications. Visitors to Heraklion should be aware that parts of the harbor and waterfront promenade near the Port Kiosk may be affected by ongoing works. The Venetian Walls, built between the 16th and 17th centuries, remain one of the best-preserved examples of Venetian military architecture in the Mediterranean and are open to visitors year-round.
