Medieval Crete: Three Walkable Cities Where History Still Lives

Crete's three historic coastal cities, Chania, Rethymno, and Heraklion (known historically as Megalo Kastro), preserve some of the most significant medieval urban heritage in the eastern Mediterranean. Each city developed around a fortified core during the Venetian and Ottoman periods, leaving behind layered streetscapes of Venetian loggia, Ottoman fountains, Byzantine churches, and Venetian harbors that remain largely intact today. For visitors, these historic centers are highly walkable and best explored on foot. The old towns of Chania and Rethymno in particular are compact, with well-preserved harbor fronts, lighthouse landmarks, and converted mosques open to the public. Heraklion's historic core surrounds the Koules fortress at the harbor entrance. All three cities offer museums, archaeological sites, and traditional architecture within easy reach of accommodation, making them natural bases for exploring the island.
