Back to newsThe Omalos plateau in western Crete has a new development relevant to the region's agriculture and water management. The Organization for the Development of Crete (OAK) has officially assumed management of the Omalos reservoir following a formal contract signed between OAK and the Regional Authority of Crete. The reservoir will supply irrigation water to approximately 4,000 stremmas (around 400 hectares) of vegetable crops in the area. Omalos is best known to visitors as the gateway to the Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest gorges and a popular hiking destination. This infrastructure development supports local farming communities in the plateau, which sits at roughly 1,000 metres elevation. No impact on tourist access to the Samaria Gorge or the Omalos plateau is expected as a result of this administrative change.
