Saharan Dust Cloud Set to Blanket Crete This Saturday

Friday, 15 May 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
A thick veil of African dust is forecast to cover Crete this Saturday, according to METEO, the weather service of the National Observatory of Athens. The dust originates from the Sahara and is carried northward by atmospheric circulation patterns. Concentrations are expected to be elevated across the island throughout the day. Tourists should be aware that visibility may be reduced and the sky may appear hazy or orange-tinged. Outdoor air quality will be lower than usual, so those with respiratory conditions, allergies, or asthma are advised to limit prolonged outdoor activity and carry any prescribed medication. If spending time outside, wearing a light mask or covering your nose and mouth can help. Keep windows closed where possible to prevent dust from entering accommodations. The phenomenon is temporary and typically clears within 24 to 48 hours.
