Back to newsThe Crete Aquarium, operated by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), will release a rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) back into the wild on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM. The turtle had been in the aquarium's care for three months following rescue or injury treatment. Caretta caretta turtles are a protected species and a common sight in Cretan waters, nesting on beaches across the island each summer. Tourists interested in attending the release event can check with the Crete Aquarium directly for the exact beach location. Visitors swimming or boating in Cretan coastal areas are reminded to keep a safe distance from sea turtles and avoid disturbing nesting sites marked on beaches during the nesting season, which runs through summer.
