Back to newsGreece has introduced a bounty scheme targeting the lagocephalus sceleratus, commonly known as the silver-cheeked toadfish or rabbit-head pufferfish, an invasive and highly toxic species spreading through Greek waters including those around Crete. Fishermen are being financially incentivized to catch and report the fish as part of a broader effort to control its population. The lagocephalus sceleratus contains tetrodotoxin, a powerful poison found in its skin, liver, and organs, which makes it dangerous if handled or consumed. There is no antidote. Tourists should never purchase or eat this fish from any vendor, and if spotted in the water it should not be touched. The initiative reflects growing concern among Greek authorities about the ecological and public health risks posed by this Lessepsian migrant species entering the Mediterranean from the Red Sea.
