Greece Bans Sun Loungers at 251 Beaches to Protect Sea Turtles

Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Greece has designated 251 beaches across the country as protected zones where the placement of sun loungers and beach umbrellas is prohibited. This measure aims to preserve natural coastal ecosystems, particularly nesting habitats for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) and other protected species that require undisturbed sandy stretches. Several of these protected beaches are located in Crete, including areas along the southern coast known for turtle nesting activity. Visitors to these beaches should plan to bring their own portable shade solutions such as beach tents or personal umbrellas, as rental equipment will not be available on site. Authorities may issue fines for non-compliance. Tourists are encouraged to check with their accommodation or local tourism offices to confirm whether their intended beach is on the protected list before visiting.
