Greek Red Cross warns tourists of toxic pufferfish in Mediterranean

Wednesday, 17 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The Greek Red Cross has issued a warning to tourists about pufferfish (blowfish) in the Mediterranean Sea, including waters around Crete. While pufferfish are not aggressive, they carry tetrodotoxin, a potent toxin found in their skin and organs that can cause serious harm if handled or consumed. Their presence in Greek waters has increased in recent years due to warming sea temperatures. Swimmers and snorkelers should avoid touching or picking up any pufferfish spotted in the water or washed ashore. Fishermen should discard them carefully without handling the skin or internal organs. Do not eat pufferfish under any circumstances, as the toxin has no antidote and can be fatal. If you come into contact with a pufferfish and experience symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately.
