Heraklion Surprises Visitors With Depth of Ancient History and Culture

Tuesday, 16 June 2026/SourceGreek Reporter/1 min read
Heraklion, the capital of Crete, is one of the Mediterranean's most historically rich cities and often surprises visitors with the depth of its offerings. The city is home to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, one of the finest in Greece, housing artifacts from the Minoan civilization dating back over 3,500 years. Nearby, the Palace of Knossos — Europe's oldest city — is a short bus or taxi ride from the center. The old Venetian harbor, lined with seafood restaurants and cafes, offers a relaxed base for exploring. The city center is walkable, with the 1866 street market ideal for local produce, cheeses, and olive oil. Heraklion also serves as Crete's main transport hub, with ferry connections to Athens and an international airport handling direct flights from across Europe.
