Greece Bans Commercial Services on 250 Protected Beaches

Monday, 1 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Greece has designated 250 beaches across the country as protected zones where commercial activity is strictly prohibited. Under the new regulation, beach bars, sun loungers, and parasol rental services are banned on these sites to preserve their natural character and ensure free public access to the shoreline. Several beaches in Crete are included on the protected list. Visitors planning to spend a day at these locations should bring their own towels, umbrellas, and refreshments, as no rental equipment or food service will be available on-site. The measure is part of a broader national effort to curb overdevelopment along the coast and protect ecosystems, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas. Tourists are advised to check in advance whether their chosen beach falls under the new rules before heading out, to avoid arriving unprepared.
