The mountain village of Anogia, located on the northern slopes of Mount Psiloritis in the Rethymno regional unit, has received a rare snowfall, drawing attention from visitors and locals alike. Anogia sits at approximately 750 metres above sea level and occasional winter snow transforms the village into an unusual sight for an island destination. Tourists who made the trip up from the northern coast reported the landscape as a striking contrast to Crete's typically mild climate.
If you plan to visit, Anogia is roughly 50 kilometres south of Heraklion via the inland road through Tylissos. During or after snowfall, mountain roads can become icy, so check conditions before driving and consider using winter tyres or chains. The village is known for its traditional music, weaving craft, and local food, making it a worthwhile stop even outside snow season.
