Crete's Kastelli Airport Set to Double Capacity When Opening in 2028

Tuesday, 2 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Crete's new international airport, Kastelli, is under construction near Heraklion in central-northern Crete and is expected to open in 2028. It will replace the current Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis Airport and will have a capacity of up to 18 million passengers per year, roughly double the current airport's throughput. The new facility will be located approximately 25 kilometres east of Heraklion city centre, near the town of Kastelli. Dedicated road and transport links are being planned to connect it to major destinations across the island. For tourists, the new airport promises shorter queues, modern facilities, and improved connections to eastern Crete. Until opening, all flights continue to operate through the existing Heraklion airport as normal.
