Crete Hit by 4.7 and 5.3 Earthquakes; Larger Quake Could Be Foreshock

Saturday, 20 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Two earthquakes struck Crete in quick succession, measuring 4.7 and 5.3 on the Richter scale. Both occurred along the same fault line. Seismologist Ganas confirmed that the stronger 5.3 magnitude tremor was the more significant of the two, but cautioned that it remains unclear whether this represents the main seismic event or a foreshock to a potentially larger quake. Tourists currently on the island should be aware that aftershocks are possible in the coming hours or days. As a precaution, stay away from older stone structures after any tremor, avoid coastal areas immediately following strong shaking due to the low but present tsunami risk in the Aegean, and follow guidance from local authorities. Most modern hotels and tourist facilities in Crete are built to current seismic standards. Monitor local news for updates before visiting archaeological sites or remote areas.
