The Agricultural Engineers Association of Crete (GEOTEE) has declared that conditions on the island are ready for an organized pufferfish (lagokefalo) fishing program. The lagokefalo is a toxic invasive species that has spread rapidly throughout Cretan waters in recent years, posing risks to both local fishermen and beachgoers. GEOTEE's Crete branch supports launching a structured harvesting initiative to help control the population, following similar programs already implemented elsewhere in Greece. For visitors, this is a relevant safety note: lagokefalo can be found near Cretan shores and is highly toxic if consumed. It should never be eaten, as it contains tetrodotoxin, a potentially fatal poison. If you see one caught or washed ashore, do not handle it.
