Back to newsA second species of rabbitfish, more venomous than the one already known in Greek waters, has been identified off the Peloponnese coast. Rabbitfish, sometimes called the "Greek fugu," are an invasive species that entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal and have been spreading across Greek seas, including waters around Crete. These fish carry a potent toxin in their skin and organs. Swimmers and snorkelers should avoid handling any unfamiliar fish found on beaches or in shallow waters. If you catch a rabbitfish while fishing, do not attempt to clean or eat it. In case of contact or suspected poisoning, seek medical attention immediately. Local health authorities continue to monitor the spread of these species throughout the Aegean and Cretan seas.
