Crete Officials Address Lifeguard Shortage at Popular Beaches

Friday, 22 May 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Officials from the Decentralized Administration of Crete met in Heraklion to discuss lifeguard coverage on beaches within the Municipality of Hersonissos. The meeting addressed ongoing issues affecting safety standards along the coastline of one of Crete's most visited tourist areas, which includes popular resort destinations such as Hersonissos, Malia, and Stalida. All identified problems were reviewed during the session. Hersonissos municipality attracts large numbers of visitors each summer, and adequate lifeguard presence on its beaches is a key safety requirement under Greek law. Tourists planning to swim at beaches in this area should check whether their chosen beach displays a blue flag or has a lifeguard on duty before entering the water, particularly at smaller or less frequented stretches of coastline. No resolution timeline was announced following the meeting.
