Europe Tests White Traffic Signal for Autonomous Vehicles

Tuesday, 21 April 2026/Flashnews/1
European traffic authorities are exploring the introduction of a white light signal at intersections, adding to the existing red, amber, and green system. The new signal, still in early research stages, would indicate that vehicles should follow the flow of surrounding autonomous or connected cars rather than stopping or proceeding independently. Researchers recommend pilot testing in controlled environments before any rollout to urban road networks. No timeline has been confirmed for Greece or Crete. For tourists currently renting cars and driving on the island, existing traffic light rules remain unchanged. Crete's road network, particularly along the BOAK northern highway and mountain routes, follows standard European signalling. Visitors should remain attentive at intersections, as local driving habits can differ from northern European norms.
