Back to newsCrete is expecting its first major heatwave of the season starting mid-next week, with temperatures forecast to reach 40°C (104°F). The heat will also significantly raise the risk of wildfires across the island.
Tourists should plan outdoor activities for the early morning before 11am and avoid midday sun entirely. Stay well hydrated and carry water at all times. Avoid hiking or visiting exposed archaeological sites during peak hours (11am to 5pm). Keep an eye on local fire risk bulletins, particularly if staying near forested or rural areas, and follow any evacuation instructions from authorities immediately. Air-conditioned museums, caves such as Dikteon Andron, and seaside tavernas are good midday refuges. Check your accommodation has functioning air conditioning before the heatwave arrives.
