Back to newsOn Sunday, June 21 at 11:00 AM, the village of Anopoli in the Sfakia region of southern Crete hosts the annual commemoration of the Daskalogiannis Revolution of 1770. The ceremony takes place in Anopoli, the birthplace of Ioannis Daskalogiannis, a Cretan merchant and local leader who organized the first major armed uprising against Ottoman rule on the island. Although the revolt was ultimately suppressed and Daskalogiannis was captured and executed, he remains one of Crete's most celebrated historical figures and a symbol of resistance. The event typically includes official speeches and traditional observances. Anopoli sits above the Sfakia coast in the White Mountains area, roughly 70 kilometers southwest of Chania. Visitors with an interest in Cretan history are welcome to attend. The drive from Chania takes approximately one hour via the coastal road through Hora Sfakion.
