Road Safety Measures Create Divide on Crete's BOAK Highway

Drivers and local residents have raised concerns about the installation of bollards along the BOAK highway, the main east-west road crossing Crete. The bollards were introduced as a road safety measure on sections where no central crash barrier exists, separating opposing lanes of traffic. While authorities consider them a necessary precaution to reduce head-on collisions, many motorists find them disruptive or poorly positioned. For tourists renting cars and driving across the island, the BOAK is the primary route connecting Heraklion with destinations to the east such as Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, or west toward Rethymno and Chania. Drivers should expect narrower lane conditions in affected sections and are advised to reduce speed, stay within lane markings, and remain attentive, particularly when overtaking or driving at night.
