Back to newsA doctoral thesis from the Hellenic Mediterranean University (ΕΛΜΕΠΑ) examining Western Crete reveals a growing gap between what tourists want and what they find. Visitors consistently seek authentic Cretan products, including local olive oil, cheeses, herbs, and wines, but these items are rarely available or prominently offered in hotels and rental accommodations. Despite high visitor demand and strong satisfaction when local products are encountered, most tourist-facing businesses do not systematically stock or promote them. For travelers wanting genuine Cretan food experiences, local markets, traditional tavernas, and village shops remain the most reliable options. The study highlights a missed opportunity for the island's hospitality sector and underscores the value of seeking out smaller, locally run establishments rather than relying on mainstream accommodation to deliver an authentic taste of Crete.
