Back to newsA tree planting initiative took place in the eastern Cretan villages of Kato Zakros and Xerokampos as part of NaTour4CChange, a European project promoting nature-based solutions to climate change. Both villages sit in the remote Lasithi region near the Minoan palace of Zakros and the scenic Gorge of the Dead, making them popular stops for hikers and archaeology enthusiasts. The reforestation effort aims to restore local vegetation, improve the natural landscape, and support sustainable tourism in an area known for its unspoiled coastline and rugged terrain. Visitors exploring eastern Crete can expect the natural environment around these sites to gradually improve over coming seasons. Kato Zakros and Xerokampos are accessible by road from Sitia, roughly a one-hour drive, and are best visited between April and October.
