A large section of the western wall of the historic Itzedine fortress in Kalami, near Chania, has collapsed. The fortress is one of Crete's most historically significant sites, carrying over two and a half centuries of Cretan and Greek history, including its use as a place of imprisonment and martyrdom during periods of Ottoman and later foreign occupation. Tourists planning to visit the Kalami area should be aware that access to or around the fortress may be restricted while authorities assess the structural damage.
