Red Weevil Infestation Hits Crete's Vai Palm Forest

Friday, 17 April 2026/CretaOne/1
The Vai Palm Forest in eastern Crete, home to Europe's largest natural palm grove and a protected ecosystem of exceptional biodiversity, is currently under active treatment for red palm weevil infestation. Forestry authorities are conducting ongoing inspections and pesticide spraying operations to combat the invasive beetle, which poses a serious threat to the native Cretan date palms (Phoenix theophrasti). The forest remains open to visitors, and the treatment program reflects authorities' commitment to preserving this rare natural landmark. Tourists planning to visit Vai should be aware that spraying operations may be taking place on site. The area is located near Sitia in the Lasithi region, approximately 90 kilometers east of Agios Nikolaos. Entry to the palm grove may be subject to temporary restrictions during active treatment periods, so checking locally before your visit is advisable.
