Sunday, 24 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Emergency services including the Fire Service and EKAV ambulance crews were dispatched to the village of Avdou, in the Heraklion regional unit of central Crete, after a heavy vehicle went off a cliff. The number of injured is not yet known, and rescue operations are ongoing. Avdou is located in the Pediada area, roughly 30 kilometers southeast of Heraklion city, accessible via rural mountain roads. Visitors driving in this area should expect possible road disruptions as emergency vehicles respond to the scene. Mountain roads in this part of Crete can be narrow and winding, and drivers are advised to reduce speed, stay alert for emergency traffic, and follow directions from local authorities. Check local traffic updates before traveling through the Avdou and Pediada area until the situation is resolved.
