Back to newsMosquitoes do not bite everyone equally, and understanding why can help you prepare for evenings outdoors in Crete. Research shows that body odor is the main factor, as mosquitoes are attracted to specific skin bacteria and the compounds they produce. Drinking beer has also been shown to increase attractiveness to mosquitoes, likely due to changes in skin secretions. Blood type, body heat, and carbon dioxide output play additional roles. For visitors spending time on terraces, near water, or at outdoor tavernas especially after sunset, wearing light long sleeves, using DEET-based repellent, and avoiding heavily scented products will reduce bites. Mosquito activity in Crete peaks from June through September, particularly in coastal and inland areas with standing water.
