French tourist rescued from Richtis Gorge after ankle sprain

Thursday, 30 April 2026/CretaOne/1
A 58-year-old French tourist was successfully rescued after sustaining an ankle sprain while hiking through Richtis Gorge, located in eastern Crete near Exo Mouliana in Lasithi. The woman became stranded at a difficult-to-reach section of the gorge and was unable to continue on her own. Rescue teams and the Fire Service coordinated the operation, reaching her position and safely evacuating her from the terrain. Richtis Gorge is a popular hiking trail known for its waterfall and dense vegetation, but sections of the path can be uneven and physically demanding. Visitors planning to hike the gorge should wear sturdy footwear with ankle support, carry water, and inform someone of their plans before setting out. Hiking alone in remote gorges is not recommended. Emergency services in Crete respond to gorge rescues regularly, particularly during the spring and summer hiking season.
