Severe Hailstorm Ravages Dafnes, Threatens Crete Wine Harvest

Saturday, 23 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A severe hailstorm struck the Heraklion region of Crete, with particularly heavy impact reported in Dafnes, a village located approximately 15 kilometers south of the city. The storm developed rapidly, bringing intense rainfall alongside large hail that caused significant damage to local vineyards. Dafnes is known for its wine production, and the timing of the storm raises concerns for this season's harvest. Tourists visiting the area should be aware that sudden, intense weather events can occur in Crete even outside the main winter season. If you are planning excursions inland toward the Heraklion wine region or traveling by road, check local forecasts before departing. Roads in rural areas can become slippery or temporarily flooded after heavy hail and rain. The coastal areas of Heraklion city were not reported as significantly affected.
