Heraklion's Iconic Morosini Fountain Fenced Off for Maintenance

Wednesday, 17 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
The Morosini Fountain in the center of Heraklion, one of the city's most iconic landmarks, has been fenced off for maintenance work, prompting a formal inquiry from politician Lefteris Avgenakis to Culture Minister Lina Mendoni. The fountain, built in 1628 and known for its four lion sculptures that give it the popular nickname "The Lions," sits at the heart of Lions Square (Plateia Liondarion) and is a focal point for visitors exploring the old town. The fencing currently limits close access to the monument and affects the atmosphere of the surrounding square. No timeline for the completion of the maintenance has been publicly confirmed. Tourists visiting Heraklion can still view the fountain from outside the perimeter and explore the many cafes and shops lining the square while restoration work continues.
