Crete High School Student Diagnosed with Meningitis; Contact Tracing Underway

Sunday, 10 May 2026/CretaOne/1
A high school student from Moires, a town in the Heraklion regional unit of central Crete, was diagnosed with meningitis after developing a fever on Friday. She was initially seen at the Moires Health Center before being transferred to the University General Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI), where her diagnosis was confirmed. Health authorities have launched a contact tracing process to identify and monitor individuals who were in close contact with the student. Meningitis is a serious bacterial or viral infection and is not easily transmitted through casual contact. Tourists visiting the Moires area or central Crete are not considered at elevated risk. However, if you or a travel companion experience sudden high fever, severe headache, or neck stiffness, seek medical attention promptly. The nearest major hospital is PAGNI in Heraklion, reachable via the BOAK highway.
