Crete Claims Greece's Blue Flag Crown With 154 Certified Beaches

Thursday, 14 May 2026/CretaOne/1
Crete has once again claimed the top spot in Greece for Blue Flag beach certifications, with 154 beaches awarded the prestigious international eco-label in 2026. Greece as a whole ranked 2nd worldwide, with hundreds of certified coastlines across the country. The Blue Flag award is granted annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education and recognizes beaches that meet strict standards for water quality, environmental management, safety, and visitor facilities. Certified beaches are required to maintain clean water, proper waste disposal, lifeguards during peak hours, and accessible facilities. For visitors, Blue Flag beaches offer a reliable benchmark when choosing where to swim. Look for the blue flag displayed at the beach entrance as a sign of verified cleanliness and safety. A full list of certified beaches in Crete is available through the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature.
