Back to newsThe European Union has introduced Regulation 2026/131, bringing new rules for travelers entering Crete and other EU destinations with pets. The most significant change takes effect in 2028, when updated microchipping requirements will become mandatory for all pets crossing EU borders. Currently, pets traveling to Greece must carry a valid EU Pet Passport, be microchipped, and have up-to-date rabies vaccinations. The new regulation strengthens traceability standards and tightens border checks to improve animal health monitoring across member states. Tourists planning to bring dogs, cats, or ferrets to Crete should ensure their pet's documentation is current well before travel. Non-EU visitors face additional requirements, including a rabies antibody titer test. Contact your vet at least four months before departure to confirm your pet meets all entry requirements under the updated framework.
