Greek MEP Urges EU to Accelerate Mediterranean Power Grid Connection

Saturday, 2 May 2026/CretaOne/1
A Greek Member of the European Parliament from the New Democracy party has formally called on the European Commission to accelerate the completion of the electrical grid interconnection between Greece and countries in the southeastern Mediterranean. The intervention aims to address the persistently high electricity prices affecting Greece, including Crete, which currently operates partly on isolated energy infrastructure. Completing this interconnection would integrate Crete more fully into a broader regional power grid, potentially lowering energy costs over time. For visitors, this has indirect relevance: energy costs in Crete influence accommodation pricing and overall tourism expenses. No immediate changes are expected, as this remains a long-term infrastructure initiative at the EU level. Tourists visiting Crete should not anticipate any disruption to electricity supply as a result of this development.
