The Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest gorges and a highlight of western Crete, reopens to visitors this Tuesday, May 19, 2026, for the 2026 season. The opening was announced by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization, which manages the Samaria National Park. The gorge stretches approximately 16 kilometers through the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and is accessible from the village of Omalos, ending at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli. The hike typically takes 4 to 6 hours depending on fitness level. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear, carry water, and start early in the day to avoid midday heat. Ferry services from Agia Roumeli to Hora Sfakion and Sougia run in coordination with gorge hours. Entrance fees apply.
