Back to newsGreek authorities have issued a warning to tourists following a pufferfish incident involving British visitors in Greece. Pufferfish, an invasive species increasingly spotted in Greek and Cretan waters, carry tetrodotoxin, a potent poison with no known antidote. Contact with or consumption of pufferfish can cause numbness, paralysis, and in severe cases, death. Swimmers and snorkelers are advised not to touch any unfamiliar fish and to keep a safe distance from pufferfish if spotted. Fishermen should release pufferfish immediately if accidentally caught and avoid handling them directly. Anyone who touches or ingests a pufferfish should seek medical attention immediately. Local health services and coastal authorities continue to monitor the situation as the species spreads further across Mediterranean coastlines.
